Jeff Bridges’ Quote on Marriage Reveals How Fear Can Shape Love

A career across screen roles

Bridges has played The Dude in The Big Lebowski, a Marvel villain in Iron Man, and the lead in FX’s The Old Man for two seasons. He most recently played twins in 2026’s Minions & Monsters.

Although best known for film, he also appeared on television early in his career. His credits include an episode of ABC’s The F.B.I. and an episode of CBS’ Lassie.

Doubts about getting married

The quote came from a 2025 conversation with The New Yorker promoting Bridges’ album Slow Magic: 1977-1978, recorded in the late 1970s. He discussed how his thinking about life, love and marriage shifted over time.

Bridges said he was unsure about marriage after dating Susan for three years. She understood his hesitation but planned to leave in hopes of starting a family; he then realized he did not want to lose what he called a “diamond” in his life.

Finding value in commitment

Bridges once feared that marriage would slow him down and bring him closer to the end of life. He came to see its “treasure” as working through both the good and difficult moments together.

His reflection suggests that fear can stand in the way of commitment, while also recognizing that the future is uncertain. In a 2005 Telegraph interview, Bridges said he had worked with his wife on staying connected while his work took his focus.
