Nashville Defenseman Hague Says He’ll Be Ready for His Next Opportunity After Two Scratches

Competition reshapes the defense
Nashville has opened the season with urgency after falling behind in the standings over the past few years. The Predators’ 17 points through 15 games have put them in a Western Conference Wild Card position.
Competition across the roster has led coach Andrew Brunette to use seven defensemen as he evaluates pairings. Hague was held out for the third period against Washington last week. Brunette said the other players were performing better and Hague had not played his best game, explaining why the top six defensemen played.
Hague remains involved
Hague, a 2023 Stanley Cup champion, is in his eighth NHL season and second with Nashville. Across 439 games, he has averaged 17:49 of ice time and recorded 559 blocked shots, 664 hits and 117 takeaways.
After appearing in the Predators’ first 13 games, Hague was scratched for the next two, both wins, against Tampa Bay and Carolina. Brunette used a lineup with 12 forwards and six defensemen in those games.
Hague said the situation gives him a chance to concentrate on his game. He remains a full participant at practice and is at the arena on game days while working toward a return.
Ready if called upon
Hague said he would be ready if he gets back into the lineup. He also described trying to stay connected with teammates while watching games and working out at the arena.
Nashville faces Colorado on the road this week as it pursues a third consecutive win. The team’s fathers and mentors are on the trip, including Hague’s father, Bob.
Hague called his father his main supporter throughout his career and said the trips give them time together. The Predators and Avalanche are scheduled to meet at Bell Arena at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
