Mets’ Primary Pitching Trade Target Appears to Stay on the Market’s Other Side

Mets Need Veteran Starters

Starting pitching is a key need for the Mets this winter. Nolan McLean, Christian Scott and Zac Thornton form a young group, but the team wants at least two quality veteran starters to help return to the postseason.

Tarik Skubal is described as the leading free-agent prize, with Mets fans hoping he could head the rotation in 2027. If the team does not sign him, it could pursue a mid-tier free agent or seek help through a trade.

Rays Signal Rasmussen Plans

Drew Rasmussen appeared to be a possible trade fit, particularly if the Mets missed out on Skubal. The 31-year-old has become one of baseball’s best pitchers over the past two years and helped the Rays reach the World Series.

Rays President of Baseball Operations Erik Neander said the club’s intention is to have Rasmussen anchor its rotation. He added that Tampa Bay believes it would be harder to improve without Rasmussen after coming close to its goal.

Rasmussen’s $20 million club option for 2027 had fueled trade speculation, since it could make him a valuable asset. The Rays’ stated plans, however, point toward keeping him.

Other Trade Options Emerge

The Mets recently made a trade with Tampa Bay for Freddy Peralta before the deadline. They also have a healthy farm system and major-league players who could have figured into a hypothetical Rasmussen deal.

With Rasmussen appearing less attainable, Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns could consider Joe Ryan, Logan Gilbert, George Kirby or MacKenzie Gore. Ryan has made two consecutive All-Star teams and owns a 3.79 career ERA.

Ryan could pair with McLean near the top of the rotation. The Mets could also pursue a mid-tier starter such as Michael Soroka or Tyler Mahle, while the trade and free-agent markets develop in the coming weeks amid a looming lockout.
