GOP Rep. Mike Lawler defeated in New York battleground district

Conley wins Hudson Valley seat
CBS News projected that Democrat Cait Conley defeated Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s highly competitive Hudson Valley district. Lawler, a two-term representative, called Conley to concede Tuesday.
Vote-counting continued longer than expected because of issues at polling precincts in Westchester County. The seat has been closely contested in recent elections.
A district Republicans sought to hold
Lawler has represented the lower Hudson Valley seat since 2023, after narrowly defeating Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney. Maloney had served as House Democrats’ campaign chief.
Debate highlighted key differences
At their Sept. 30 debate, Conley said she supported continued military aid to Israel and did not believe Israel’s actions in Gaza constituted genocide. Those positions differed from many in her party and could matter given the district’s demographics.
