After Democrats’ Midterm Wins, Business Leaders React as Blunami Sweeps America on Election Night

Democrats make major gains

The midterms brought Democrats a series of unexpected victories on Tuesday evening, reshaping power in Washington. In Texas, James Talarico won a Senate race against Republican Ken Paxton, whose campaign received more than $150 million from Elon Musk.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa also won the Texas governorship. The result marked the first time in decades that a Democrat had won a statewide race in the state, according to the report.

Executives respond to results

LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman, a Democratic megadonor, welcomed the party’s victories in a post on X. He said the night had exceeded expectations and that voters had rejected the status quo across several states.

Musk, who spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Republicans, posted twice on X late on election night. In one post, he joked that his “election-interfering space lasers” had not worked this time.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said the results should prompt technology companies to explain more clearly how AI and data centers benefit local communities. She said the industry needed to make the value of data centers clear to the communities hosting them.

Calls for political response

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi discussed the results in a Wednesday morning CNBC interview. He said businesses, politicians and Washington leaders should respond to what he described as a clear message from voters. Mark Cuban did not post a direct reaction to the election results. On Wednesday, as Congress shifted to Democratic control, he expressed support for universal healthcare and referred to Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed’s book, “Medicare for All.”

Miami results draw attention

Keith Rabois, a Khosla Ventures managing director who previously held executive roles at PayPal, LinkedIn and Square, posted overnight: “Another reason to move to Miami.” Two of Miami’s three main congressional districts swung strongly toward Democrats. The district covering downtown Miami appeared poised to reelect its Republican incumbent narrowly, with 99% of the vote counted.
