Apple TV’s Murderbot Creator Officially Signals What May End the Book Series

A possible final book

Wells released Platform Decay, the eighth book in The Murderbot Diaries, earlier in May. In an interview with Polygon, she said she currently has one more book in the series under contract.

Wells said she has only vague ideas for the next installment and may not begin it until at least the end of the year. She added that it could be the final book, though she has not confirmed that as a certainty.

The series on Apple TV

Created by Paul and Chris Weitz, Murderbot adapts Wells’ science-fiction books. Alexander Skarsgård plays a security robot that gains free will and conceals it while joining a mission to protect scientists on a dangerous planet.

The show premiered May 16, 2025, and its first season ended July 11. The ten-episode season has a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating from 82 reviews and an 82% audience score.

Season two awaits a date

Apple TV renewed Murderbot for a second season, which began production this April. More than a year after the first season wrapped, the new season still has no announced premiere date.

The series has consistently ranked near the top of Apple TV’s charts in the U.S. and internationally. Its cast also includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tamara Podemski and Tattiawna Jones.
