11 R-Rated Batman Movies Ranked: Which Dark Knight Stories Stand Out?

When Adaptations Miss Their Mark

Batman: The Killing Joke brought a celebrated DC comic to the screen, with Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill voicing Batman and the Joker. Critics also praised its animation and later act.

But the film changed the source story by adding a romance between Batman and Barbara Gordon. That choice drew criticism, as did the way Barbara’s role was seen as serving Batman’s and her father’s stories rather than her own.

Batman Beyond Gotham’s Familiar World

Aztec Batman: Clash Of Empires recasts Bruce Wayne as Yohualli Coatl, an Aztec noble who becomes a vigilante after a Spanish conquistador kills his father. Its setting and designs offer a distinctive Elseworlds take while keeping recognizable characters.

The movie proved less popular than some viewers hoped. Its storyline was criticized for lacking impact, and the handling of its historical source material was controversial.

Interactive Choices And Darker Fates

Batman: Death In The Family lets viewers decide whether Jason Todd lives or dies. The interactive approach echoes the comic, which asked readers to vote on Robin’s fate, and gives the story a darker edge.

The format did not win over viewers broadly. One reason was the earlier, better-received adaptation of parts of the same comic story in 2010’s Batman: Under the Red Hood.

A Victorian Gotham Reimagined

Gotham By Gaslight adapts a well-known Elseworlds Batman story, placing the hero in a gothic, steampunk-influenced Victorian setting. Its less technologically advanced world still gives Batman the tools to pursue his mission.

The film has been criticized for using violence and sexuality that some considered gratuitous in pursuit of its R rating. Its fresh setting, however, suits a Dark Knight story despite the changes to his usual world.

  • R-rated Batman films explore darker themes, but mature content has not ensured positive reception.
  • The Killing Joke was criticized for adding a romance between Batman and Barbara Gordon.
