After Galliano Controversy, 2027 Met Gala Unveils Everyday Wear Theme for May 3

A broader fashion focus

The Met Gala’s new theme, “extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday,” will also shape the accompanying exhibition at the Costume Institute. The spring 2027 show will look at fashion and art more broadly, rather than centering on one designer and fantastical costumes.

Exhibition organizers told Vogue that the show will examine both the elevation of familiar garments, such as tees and jeans, and the transformation of materials like paper, aluminum and plastic into wearable art. The exhibition will draw on the Met’s fashion collection.

Galliano exhibition canceled

John Galliano withdrew from the 2027 Met Gala in August after past remarks, including an antisemitic rant, became a cultural flashpoint. He said in an Instagram post that, after reflection and discussion, he felt the exhibition should not take place at that time.

The Met later said it would not proceed with the Galliano exhibition, “following thoughtful discussions,” according to director and CEO Max Hollein. The canceled show, titled “John Galliano: Horizons,” was overseen by Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director and a Met trustee.

Bolton sought a distinct idea

Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, said he did not have a backup plan after Galliano’s departure. He told Vogue he wanted an exhibition that would be challenging, provocative and beautiful, while having contemporary resonance.

Bolton said the new concept was not intended as a substitute for a showcase of another master designer. The Met Gala will take place May 3, 2027, followed by the exhibition’s public opening on May 9; it is scheduled to run through January 2028.
