Scott Parker returns as West Ham United confirm former midfielder as head coach

Parker takes charge at West Ham

West Ham United confirmed Parker’s appointment on a two-and-a-half-year deal. He returns to the London Stadium after his Burnley side lost 3-2 there last November. Parker has been out of work since leaving Burnley in April, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. He previously guided Fulham, Bournemouth and Burnley to promotion from the Championship.

A promotion target

Parker became the leading candidate after West Ham dismissed Nuno. That decision followed consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. The club struggled for consistency in the Championship after relegation last season. Parker said he was keen to lead West Ham back to the Premier League and believed he could help achieve that goal.

Coaching team and board support

Interim chief executive Karim Virani said Parker was highly regarded at the club and across football, and was the board’s unanimous selection. Virani said the club believed Parker could help meet its objectives this season and beyond.

Key points

  • Scott Parker has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract as West Ham head coach.
  • Parker has previously led three clubs to promotion from the Championship.
  • His appointment follows Nuno’s departure after two consecutive home defeats.
