GOP midterm defeats: Vance blames Iran conflict as former Trump voters shift to Democrats

Vance points to the war

In a post on X, Vance attributed the Republicans’ loss of both congressional chambers to the war in Iran. He said President Trump had also identified the conflict as the reason for the losses.

Vance challenged supporters who believe the war justified the political cost, including losing the Senate for the next six years. He said an honest discussion about the party’s next steps should begin with the war.

Voters shifted their support

Vance said an unnamed data analyst had warned that voters who backed him and Trump in 2024 were angry and might support Democrats in the midterms. He said events appeared to confirm that assessment.

He cited Florida, where the electorate was nine points more Republican than Democratic, a margin he said was only a couple of points worse than in 2024. Vance acknowledged turnout could have been better in some places, but argued that voter defections—not turnout—were the bigger problem.

War continues amid costs

Trump began the war in late February and initially said it would last four to five weeks. It has since continued into its eighth month, while gas prices have risen.

U.S. casualties reported

The Defense Department said 23 U.S. service members have been killed during the conflict and 865 have been wounded. Vance said he remained hopeful about the country and urged angry voters to support Republicans who share their views. He also told those upset by the results to channel their anger into efforts to save the country.
