Trump admits Iran war played a role in GOP losses as Strait attacks continue

Trump weighs election losses

Trump acknowledged Tuesday night that the war with Iran was partly responsible for the GOP’s defeat in the midterm elections. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, he said he did not regret the conflict and would have made the same decision again.

Iran’s chief negotiator said Wednesday that the election results showed Americans had rejected the war. He cited the rising cost of living or “conscience” as possible reasons for Republican losses.

Iran’s military also said two other vessels that did not comply had been halted. The report did not provide further details about the ships or the incidents.

Peace efforts face uncertainty

Qatari mediators expect feedback within 36 hours from U.S. and Iranian negotiators on new ideas to move toward a deal, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing an official briefed on the talks. Efforts to prevent renewed fighting have recently intensified.

Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council said Tuesday that the U.S. response to Iran’s demands was “not convincing.” Iranian officials had said Monday that the next move was up to the United States and that Iran’s core demands would not change.

Trump has said he remains open to an agreement, while also threatening to resume major U.S. strikes after the midterm elections. He said the war would be put away very soon, “one way or the other.”
