Tom Hardy’s Exit From Apple TV’s New Crime Thriller Series Adaptation Addressed By Showrunner

A changed lead role
Liev Schreiber plays former detective Jonah Lynn, while Stephen Graham portrays Jurek Walter. Hardy had been expected to work in front of and behind the camera, but Schreiber and Graham joined the series instead.
Schreiber’s approach to Jonah
Showrunner John Hlavin described Schreiber as highly intelligent and focused on authenticity. Their first day of filming included a scene in which Jonah walks through the woods while studying a map in hot, humid Pennsylvania weather.
Schreiber wore a lined Carhartt jacket and carried a backpack and gun. When Hlavin offered to remove the jacket lining, Schreiber declined, saying the heat was real and should inform the performance.
Authenticity shaped adjustments
Hlavin said that early exchange influenced later decisions about the role. He saw Schreiber’s insistence on realism as a quality that also suited Jonah, and encouraged the production to build on the actor’s willingness to take on demanding details.
Hlavin is also a writer and executive producer on Nocturne. Other cast members include Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Rory Culkin, Chrissy Metz, Poorna Jagannathan and Gary Carr.
Early reception and release
The report said two episodes had been released on Apple TV and that critics had shared positive reviews. Nocturne had an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at that point.
Schreiber had previously received multiple Emmy nominations for Ray Donovan. His other credits include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Spotlight, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Perfect Couple and Splinter Cell: Deathwatch.
