Democrats won redrawn districts after republicans tried to gerrymander away congressional losses, but it didn’t work

Redrawn districts go to Democrats

Democrats scored victories Tuesday in several congressional districts Republicans had reshaped to benefit their party. In Florida, Kathy Castor, Pia Dandiya and Jared Moskowitz won in redrawn districts, according to Associated Press race calls.

In North Carolina, Democratic Rep. Don Davis kept his 1st District seat despite a Republican map designed to make it more competitive for the GOP. The Downballot reported Trump would have carried the revised district by nearly 12 percentage points.

Alabama and Texas results

Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures held Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District, according to the AP race call. Trump would have won the district by an even larger margin, the article reported.

Republican expectations falter

Republicans made the map changes while anticipating losses in the election cycle. Trump urged the party last year to pursue the unusual mid-decade redistricting effort. The party expected voters who supported Trump in 2024 to back Republicans again. In Texas, Republicans counted on gains among Latino voters, but many shifted their support to Democrats this year.
