Fang: Marvel Announces Name of Venom Replacement Symbiote Bonded With Mary Jane Watson

A new symbiote era

Venom has reunited with Eddie Brock, returning to the pair’s street-level anti-hero roots in Venom #1 by Charles Soule and Tommaso Bianchi. At the same time, Marvel’s symbiote lineup and lore are changing.

Queen in Black sent symbiotes to unexpected places and introduced new host pairings. Fred Myers becomes Comeback with Passenger, Dylan Brock works with Toxin, and Jessica Drew struggles to control Carnage. Sleeper becomes King in Black after Knull’s defeat.

Mary Jane meets Fang

Mary Jane’s earlier time as Venom’s host ended when she transformed Earth into Venomworld to defeat Knull. After Queen in Black, she returns to acting, now with a new symbiote called Fang.

Fang appears as the black-and-gold jacket Mary Jane wears, and can also take the shape of a small puddle. She uses its abilities in her daily life and draws on its power to fight Stilt-Man.

Fang’s limits remain clear

Fang is described as an offshoot of Venom, but it is currently weak. During the fight with Stilt-Man, it is not strong or thick enough to prevent Mary Jane from hurting her hand when she punches him.

The story suggests Fang could evolve, become stronger, develop a face and personality, or gain unique powers. Those possibilities have not yet been confirmed. Friendly Neighborhood Mary Jane #1 is available from Marvel Comics.
