TechCrunch: I tried Apple Siri Recaps—surprisingly useful, with a little unsettling edge

Four audio features arrive

Apple introduced four Audio Intelligence features in the first developer betas of iOS 27.3 and watchOS 27.3. They are designed for Apple Watch Series 12 wearers and include sound detection, song identification, Live Rewind and Siri Recaps.

Sound detection can alert users to sounds such as alarms or doorbells, while song identification uses Shazam technology. Live Rewind lets users review the previous 15 seconds; Siri Recaps summarizes audio across the day. The latter two features record and transcribe or summarize conversations near the watch owner.

Recaps captured useful details

In a test during a car repair drop-off and rental pickup, employees provided information about schedules, prices and policies too quickly to write down. Siri Recaps later saved details including the deductible, repair time frame and the rental’s starting fuel level.

The feature also captured an errand reminder from a family conversation. But it placed those details alongside information about babysitting and a family calendar appointment, rather than separating them into a distinct note about schedules and errands.

Privacy and organization concerns

Apple says it processes audio and runs AI models on-device when possible. It also says the features do not identify speakers or store raw audio, and that private information such as government ID numbers and account details is redacted.

The feature was configured to run continuously, so it also saved casual remarks about watching midterms coverage. That prompted concern about everyday conversations becoming notes, and the possibility of more personal discussions being captured. The tester considered switching Recaps off at home in the evening.

The experience left the tester seeing both the potential value and the unease of technology that is always listening. Live Rewind had not yet been tested in an appropriate situation, and the tester expected to use it less often than Siri Recaps.

Key points

  • Siri Recaps saved repair and rental details that were difficult to note in real time.
  • The feature combined unrelated car information and family scheduling conversations in one note.
  • Continuous recording also captured casual remarks, raising concerns about privacy at home.
  • Apple says it uses on-device processing when possible and does not store raw audio.
