After Election Wins, house democratic leader hakeem jeffries declares america back—with ambitious agenda ahead

Jeffries sets out priorities

Addressing supporters in Washington, D.C., Jeffries said voters had rejected political extremism and corruption. He said Democrats would seek substantial changes after taking control of Congress in January.

Jeffries named affordable housing, education, health care and retirement benefits as areas of focus. He said the party would work to make life more affordable for Americans. “This is a change election,” Jeffries said, adding that Democrats needed to deliver change and put the public first. He also pledged to pursue accountability for corruption by people in high office.

Election reshapes Washington

The election results are set to end Republican control of Washington, amid voter anger over Trump’s handling of the economy, the Iran war and rising living costs. With Congress divided, Trump will no longer have a Republican-led legislature to advance his agenda.

Democrats’ victories are expected to hasten Trump’s lame-duck status. Jeffries is on track to become House speaker, and would be the first Black person to hold the position.

Republicans acknowledge losses

House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed supporters in Shreveport, Louisiana, and said his party had faced difficult odds in trying to retain its majority. He said midterm history made holding the House especially challenging.

Johnson described democracy as a system not ruled by a king or monarch, and said he had given his all to the effort. He said the historical pattern appeared likely to continue.

Plans face hurdles

Democrats may struggle to enact some of their more ambitious proposals. Their plans to address affordability could meet resistance from Trump, who can veto legislation. Jeffries said Republicans had spent more than Democrats in races around the country. He also said voters had made clear they could not be bought, and promised a focus on tackling corruption.
