Ohio GOP’s Embattled Miller Loses Reelection Amid Domestic Abuse Allegations and Pressure to Resign

A race that tightened

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report had classified the district as solid Republican earlier in the year. In August, it changed its rating to toss-up.

Ethics review remains unresolved

The House Ethics Committee said in early August that it was examining allegations involving domestic abuse and illegal drug use. The committee has not released findings. Before the announcement, Miller said he would ask for an ethics investigation into himself to clear his name. The bipartisan panel observed a 60-day period before Election Day when it would not release information.

Miller denied abuse claims

In a campaign advertisement released in mid-October, Miller criticized what he called the “relentless press” for amplifying his family’s heartbreak. Miller denied the abuse allegations and said he shared equal custody of his daughter.

Miller and his ex-wife have finalized their divorce but remain in a custody battle. On Oct. 12, Miller attended President Trump’s rally in Youngstown, Ohio, but did not speak; Trump thanked him during the event.
