How Democrats Took Control of the House and Senate: US Midterms Takeaways

Democrats Flip Key Seats

Democrats won control of Congress after taking Republican-held seats in Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Michigan and Kansas. All 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats were contested on Tuesday, alongside special elections in Florida and Ohio.

Democrats had already flipped 25 House seats, exceeding the 21 they gained in 2008, the last time they held the largest congressional majority. Not every race had been called, and counting continued into Tuesday night, with some results potentially delayed until Wednesday or later.

The Republicans held 220 House seats after the 2024 elections, compared with 215 for Democrats. The article says Democrats have not had a clear Senate majority since 2008, when they won 56 seats.

Midterms Seen As Trump Verdict

Trump’s name was not on the ballot, but he repeatedly encouraged voters to imagine that it was. The results are being seen as a verdict on his presidency.

Historically, voters have taken House seats from the party in power in 18 of the 20 midterms held between 1946 and 2022. The average loss was 26 seats across both chambers; Bill Clinton’s Democrats in 1998 and George W Bush’s Republicans in 2002 were the exceptions described.

Historic Senate And Governor Wins

Abdul El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. At a campaign rally in Michigan, Trump said El-Sayed would be the only senator required to pass through a metal detector before entering the Senate.

In Illinois, Democrat Juliana Stratton’s Senate win means three Black women will serve in the Senate at the same time for the first time in US history. Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in the United States.

Haaland, a former interior secretary and member of the Laguna Pueblo, defeated Republican Gregg Hull, a former Rio Rancho mayor, to lead New Mexico. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall.

Other Campaign Moments

Hamilton said the next two years would be pivotal for the country, arguing that the election was a time to protect democracy. In Texas, he told supporters, “The people of Texas were my slingshot,” before saying they had defeated Goliath.

Elon Musk, a Texas resident and the world’s richest man, became a key donor in the race. Becerra said at a gathering near Sacramento that anyone coming after California or a Californian should be ready for a fight, according to The Associated Press.
