Despite Justin Tucker Signing, Chiefs Stick With Struggling Harrison Butker Against Jets

Butker remains Kansas City’s kicker

Kansas City led Denver 24-13 entering the fourth quarter but lost 28-24 after the Broncos scored twice. Between those touchdowns, Butker missed a 54-yard field goal that could have left the Chiefs needing only a field goal on their final possession.

A costly miss after strong practice

The miss was Butker’s 16th since the start of last season, the most by any NFL kicker over that period. He said afterward that he had missed the ball badly and that it did not feel good off his foot.

Butker said he had one of his best practice weeks after Tucker joined the team. He praised Tucker and said that, regardless of practice, kicks have to be made in games.

Practice updates and trade talk

First-round pick Mansoor Delane returned to practice Wednesday after missing his second game of the season because of shoulder injuries. Reid said there was a good chance offensive guard Kingsley Suamataia would return to the lineup after missing two consecutive games for what Reid called a coach’s decision.

Key points

  • Andy Reid said Harrison Butker will be active against the Jets on Sunday.
  • Butker has missed 16 kicks since the start of last season, the most in the NFL over that span.
  • Mansoor Delane returned to practice, while Peter Woods remained out with a neck stinger.
  • The Chiefs are widely expected to seek a wide receiver before next week’s trade deadline.
