At 20% of Google’s search volume, ChatGPT is catching up, OpenAI says

How OpenAI counts searches
Fry shared the comparison at a press event on Monday. OpenAI defines a search as a user query that leads to a web search, excluding tasks such as defining a term or providing a simple how-to explanation.
Fry did not specify where the Google search-volume figure came from. OpenAI’s reported level is one-fifth of Google’s, and does not mean ChatGPT has overtaken the search giant.
A wider search contest
OpenAI’s searches may draw significantly on Microsoft Bing as well as its own search index. The article notes speculation that some queries may also be routed through Google.
AI reshapes search experiences
Google is reducing conventional referrals to third-party websites while investing in AI features, including AI Overview and personalized results with visualizations and charts. Other companies are also building AI-centered search experiences.
OpenAI calls its approach “Intelligent UI,” describing visual and interactive elements inside chatbot responses. Fry said, “You’re talking to a canvas,” as he discussed where the technology may go.
Ads become part of the strategy
OpenAI sees advertising as a possible path to profitability, as it approaches a potential IPO that could be slated for early next year. Fry said ads had not caused a lasting backlash and said most users appeared not to mind them.
Last month, OpenAI said it would start showing images of sponsored products and services in ChatGPT, beyond the company name, logo and product link it had used before. Fry said ads may have shown the company it could do more of them.
