ChatGPT chat and work tabs are finally merging at OpenAI, while Codex stays separate | TechCrunch

A single ChatGPT workspace

The ChatGPT desktop app currently separates ChatGPT and Codex, with Chat and Work available as distinct tabs within ChatGPT. OpenAI appears to be responding to the difficulty users can face keeping track of where their projects are.

In an email to users, OpenAI said it is preparing to bring Chat and Work together. The combined version will initially be tested by selected users, with feedback sought before broader availability.

Tasks can continue in one place

OpenAI says the unified experience will let people move from considering an idea to asking ChatGPT to complete work. Users will be able to provide files and plugins, request items such as websites or presentations, and guide the assistant as it works on the web.

Codex will not be folded into the new workspace, according to the email. It will continue as a separate experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.

Shared token allowance

The transition will put ChatGPT and Codex on the same token allowance pool, OpenAI said. The company expects the change not to affect most users. However, some users could have to wait for allowance resets more often, depending on how much they use the services and which model they choose. Anthropic, a competitor, combined Claude’s chat and Cowork functions on one screen in September.

Key points

  • OpenAI plans to combine Chat and Work in ChatGPT, starting with selected users.
  • The merged experience is intended to support tasks from early ideas through completion.
  • Codex will remain separate in the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • ChatGPT and Codex will share a token pool, which could mean more frequent waits for some users.
