Michael Douglas shades Cher’s Oscar win for ‘Moonstruck’

Douglas backs his co-star

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Douglas said Close should have won the 1988 best actress Oscar for Fatal Attraction. Close, 79, has been nominated for eight Academy Awards but has not won a competitive Oscar.

Douglas said the nomination was, as he remembered it, Close’s fourth. He added that her performance in the film remains among the greatest of all time.

A pointed exchange on air

Host Graham Norton asked whether Douglas was referring to Cher’s win for Moonstruck. Douglas agreed, saying that was what people had said at the time, prompting laughter from Norton and the other guests.

Cher’s 1988 win

Cher, now 80, won best actress at the 1988 Oscars for Moonstruck. The other nominees included Close, Holly Hunter for Broadcast News, Sally Kirkland for Anna and Meryl Streep for Ironweed.

In the film, Cher played Loretta Castorini, an Italian-American widow in Brooklyn who accepts a marriage proposal from Johnny Cammareri, played by Danny Aiello. She later begins an affair with Johnny’s younger brother Ronny, played by Nicolas Cage.
