Meta and Lionsgate Help Bring Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping to VR Screens With $1,299 Glasses

A theatrical film goes 3D
DNEG completed the film’s 3D conversion ahead of its Nov. 20 theatrical release. The studio is known for visual effects and animation and has won an Oscar. Meta partnered on the conversion so the film could later play on its lightweight VR glasses. Those glasses are distinct from the company’s heavier VR headset.
Plans for the VR experience
Meta’s glasses are expected to become available to consumers in spring 2027. The companies have not provided a more specific release date for viewing the film on the devices.
Director Francis Lawrence said the filmmakers aimed to draw audiences into Haymitch’s experience. He said 3D offered another way to bring viewers closer to the character’s perspective.
A wider franchise partnership
Jim Packer, Lionsgate’s chief revenue officer, described the agreement as a first-of-its-kind collaboration. He said the studio was pleased to work with Meta as it explores new ways for audiences to experience the franchise.
Meta has also worked with director James Cameron on Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, a 3D film featuring Billie Eilish that is available to rent or buy exclusively on Meta VR devices. Disney also provides 3D films through Disney+.
