Lionsgate Inks Deal With Meta to Bring New ‘Hunger Games’ Movie to VR Glasses

A film prepared for VR

DNEG has completed the 3D conversion of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Meta partnered on the work so the film can later be viewed on its lightweight VR glasses.

The glasses are distinct from Meta’s heavier VR headset and are expected to become available to consumers in spring 2027. The movie’s theatrical release is scheduled for Nov. 20.

Director Francis Lawrence said the production aimed to immerse viewers in Haymitch’s experience. He said 3D offered another way to bring audiences closer to the character’s perspective.

A new franchise chapter

There have been six movies in the franchise. Lionsgate chief revenue officer Jim Packer described the Meta partnership as a new way for audiences to experience the series.

Meta’s film partnerships

Meta has also worked with director James Cameron on Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, a 3D film he directed with Billie Eilish. The film is available to rent or buy exclusively on Meta VR devices, including the lightweight glasses planned for next year.

Disney provides 3D films through Disney+. The Lionsgate deal differs by converting a feature film for a theatrical release before it becomes available on Meta’s glasses. Sarah Malkin, Meta Reality Labs’ head of entertainment, said the company sees Lionsgate’s franchises as an artistic and global fit for its upcoming glasses.
