Jim Nantz, J.J. Watt don't shy away from Justin Tucker signing during Chiefs-Broncos game

Broadcast addresses Tucker signing

Just before halftime, Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker attempted a 45-yard field goal. Nantz used the moment to discuss the team’s decision to add Justin Tucker to its practice squad, following Butker’s struggles dating to the start of last season.

Nantz said Tucker had served a 10-game suspension the previous year for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. He also said the signing, made that week, had drawn strong criticism in Kansas City and across the league. Watt added that Reid had spent much of a press conference answering questions about the move.

Allegations and team response

At a press conference the previous Wednesday, Reid was asked what message the signing sent to women. He responded that Tucker had completed his suspension and said he would leave it at that. Reid had also privately praised Butker, Nantz said, while explaining that he wanted to put the kicker under pressure.

Commentators draw praise

Reid’s response drew criticism, including from The Athletic’s Candace Buckner. Nantz and Watt’s on-air acknowledgment of the controversy was praised by ESPN’s Mina Kimes, who said they explained the issue briefly before moving on.

Butker later missed a 54-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. The miss helped open the way for Denver’s comeback win, leaving Tucker’s signing in focus.
