Report: Hegseth painting Iran war in rosy terms to keep Trump happy

Questions about Hegseth’s briefings

The Atlantic reports that Hegseth often describes developments in the Iran conflict positively when speaking with Trump. Some White House insiders, the report says, believe he does not always give a transparent account of the war’s progress, which has been at a stalemate for months.

An outside adviser quoted by the magazine said Hegseth is effective at telling Trump what he wants to hear. The report also says Hegseth and Caine were especially optimistic about the war in its early stages, and neither has held a press conference since May.

Pentagon rejects the account

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell disputed the reporting in a statement to The Independent. He said the operation’s results amount to decisive success and rejected the claims attributed to anonymous sources.

Parnell said Hegseth gives Trump and senior White House officials the full operational picture. He also defended the president’s approach to Iran and said the department was proud to conduct the operations.

War’s costs and political stakes

The United States and Israel began Operation Epic Fury on February 28. The administration initially said the campaign would take weeks, but the conflict remains unresolved nine months later, according to the report.

At least 23 U.S. service members have been killed and thousands wounded, while military assets belonging to the United States and regional allies have been damaged. The Strait of Hormuz blockade has also raised gas costs for Americans, adding pressure amid a cost-of-living crisis.

Trump weighs opinions on leaders

The report says Trump has asked allies for their views of Hegseth and Caine, a practice he has used before personnel changes. CNN previously reported that White House staff feared poor Republican results in the midterms could prompt Trump to seek someone to blame; Hegseth was among names mentioned.

The article says Hegseth could face an impeachment effort if Democrats take control of Congress, as polling suggests they might. It also reports that he has considered pursuing Marsha Blackburn’s Tennessee Senate seat if it becomes available after her gubernatorial bid.
