Edgar Wright Slams New AI Version Of His 27-Year-Old Cult Classic Series

Wright learns of AI remaster

A fan on X tagged Wright in a post about studio All3Media using AI to remaster Spaced. Wright said the news was new to him and left him disheartened.

Wright said he had spent years pushing for a Blu-ray edition, but the new release proceeded without the team’s involvement. He also said nobody involved in making the series authorized the use of AI.

Asked how the process could happen without his knowledge, Wright said the team had taken part in earlier editions but not this one. He is trying to learn more.

Series and release details

Spaced ran for two seasons, in 1999 and 2001. Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson starred as Tim Bisley and Daisy Steiner, strangers who pretend to be a couple to secure an apartment.

Nick Frost, Katy Carmichael, Mark Heap and Julia Deakin also appeared. The complete series is due on 4K Blu-ray on February 9, 2027. The set is slated to include original commentary tracks, outtakes, trailers, deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage. Other extras include the documentary Skip to the End, a 2007 reunion Q&A and a photo gallery.

Wright’s work beyond Spaced

Wright co-created and co-wrote Spaced with Stevenson, and directed every episode. Before the series, he worked on programs including Asylum, Mash and Peas, and Is It Bill Bailey?

After Spaced ended, Wright directed Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, each co-written with Pegg. His other directing credits include Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho and The Running Man; he also co-wrote Ant-Man.

Wright and Pegg are collaborating again on an undisclosed project. Wright has said it will not be a zombie movie. All3Media had not commented on his criticism as of the report.
