22 Years Later, Green Lantern’s Best Retcon Changed DC Lore Forever—and Reshaped Comic History

Two Green Lantern Origins

Alan Scott debuted in 1940 with a magic-based ring and lantern. In 1959, Hal Jordan became the first human member of the technologically powered Green Lantern Corps, establishing a different version of the mantle.

The Corps protects the universe’s 3,600 sectors. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner and other human Green Lanterns come from Sector 2814; members can fly, create force fields and form constructs, but must recharge their rings. Green Lanterns also often serve on the Justice League.

Rebirth Reframes Hal Jordan

In the 2004–2005 miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth, Kyle Rayner explained to Green Arrow that emotions could be harnessed as energy. Issue #3 presented green as the color of willpower and introduced an entity for each emotion; Parallax embodied the yellow energy of fear.

The revelation changed how readers could interpret Hal Jordan’s actions in Emerald Twilight. Parallax had influenced him while imprisoned in the Central Power Battery on Oa, then took control after Hal destroyed it. The explanation also addressed why Green Lantern constructs could not affect yellow objects.

New Corps Take Shape

After Rebirth, Sinestro organized the Sinestro Corps, whose members wielded yellow energy drawn from fear. The Zamarons formed the Star Sapphires, a Violet Lantern Corps powered by love; Carol Ferris had previously been its principal representative.

The broader spectrum added red for rage, orange for avarice, blue for hope, indigo for compassion, black for death and white for life. These groups carried the concept beyond the original green-powered Corps.

A Wider DC Universe

In Blackest Night, Nekron unleashed Black Lanterns made from reanimated DC heroes and villains, with Black Hand as his proxy. Lanterns of different colors joined the Justice League, Justice Society, Teen Titans and others to oppose the zombie threat. The White Lantern Life Entity later drove the Brightest Day crossover.

Later additions include gold, whose associated emotion remains unclear, and gray, linked to sorrow. An Invisible Emotional Spectrum includes the Ultraviolet Lantern Corps, powered by buried primal emotions and controlled by Umbrax.
