Here’s how MacBook and macOS 27 are optimized for touch on 9to5Mac

Touch controls get more space

When users tap an app window’s traffic light controls, the icons in its upper-left corner grow, providing larger touch targets. Menu bar context menus also enlarge their items during touch interaction.

Many optimized apps offer bigger touch targets, even when their buttons do not look larger. Apple also increased the spacing between menu bar items on all Macs running macOS 27.

Gestures move to the screen

The touchscreen supports actions familiar from the trackpad, including three-finger swipes for Mission Control and switching spaces. Users can also pinch to zoom and scroll through web pages.

Spotlight can be opened from the Dynamic Island, in a way similar to how it works on iPhones running iOS 27. Safari also gains pull to refresh in macOS 27.

Developers and future updates

Developers can navigate the iOS simulator with touch on the new MacBook Pro, rather than reproducing touch gestures on a trackpad. The changes build on touch optimizations Apple had already added to macOS 27 Golden Gate.

Apple says additional touch optimizations for Mac are on the way. The article points to the next WWDC as a possible occasion for seeing more, but does not describe what those updates will include.

Key points

  • The new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR is Apple’s first MacBook with a touch display.
  • macOS 27 enlarges some controls and supports trackpad-style gestures on screen.
  • Developers can navigate the iOS simulator using touch on the new MacBook Pro.
  • Safari pull to refresh and wider menu bar spacing extend to all Macs running macOS 27.
