Franz Wagner earns an A in grading every Orlando Magic player after 5 games

A strong finish in Toronto

Orlando salvaged its three-game road trip with Friday’s 121-114 victory over Toronto, moving to 2-3. Desmond Bane scored a season-high 28 points and made six three-pointers in the win.

Bane began the season 4-for-19 from beyond the arc over two games, but his Toronto performance improved his early grade to B-. The team will need him to provide a reliable spark while Suggs and Banchero are out.

Wagner leads the way

Franz Wagner received an A after playing well in all but one game, Wednesday against Toronto. His three-point shooting has lagged, but his passing and ability to create inside the arc have stood out, particularly in a lead role.

Banchero’s grade is incomplete, but he was off to a strong start before his injury. He has played roughly a game and a half; after two games, he and Wagner could each have been considered Orlando’s best player.

Carter’s rebounding and scoring

Wendell Carter Jr. earned a B+ after scoring 20 points in three of Orlando’s five games. He reached that mark five times across 78 games previously. Carter has also been the team’s most impactful rebounder so far. The account says he and the rest of the team still need to improve on the boards.

Young players make an impact

Anthony Black, graded A-, missed preseason and Orlando’s first two games, then averaged 14.3 points and 5.3 assists over three appearances. He shot 53.1 percent overall and made 8 of 14 three-pointers, a 57.1 percent rate.

Tristan da Silva earned a B+ while shooting 47.1 percent from three. More than 70 percent of his attempts have come from beyond the arc, and coach Sean Sweeney has given him the freedom to shoot.

Jase Richardson received a B- for his work as a spot-up shooter and connector. He is averaging 5.6 points and 2.2 rebounds, while shooting 45.5 percent from three on 4.1 attempts per 75 possessions and competing defensively at the point of attack.

Other early grades

Jalen Suggs played in Orlando’s first three games and earned a D. He showed some defensive disruption but made just one of nine three-point attempts and shot 35.7 percent from the floor.

Jamal Cain received a C after mixed performances, though he went 5-for-5 and scored 13 points in Friday’s win. His energy as a defender and rebounder has stood out, and he hopes to keep improving as a floor spacer.
