Antonio Banderas’ Zorro, the Mummy Replacement, Is Officially Back on Free Streaming

A hero takes up the mask
Set in 19th-century California, the film follows Alejandro Murrieta, played by Banderas, a reckless outlaw recruited by Don Diego de la Vega, played by Hopkins. Diego, once the masked Zorro, trains Alejandro after being freed from imprisonment.
Together they seek revenge against corrupt Don Rafael Montero, played by Stuart Wilson, and Captain Love, played by Matt Letscher. Alejandro’s plans grow more complicated when he falls for Elena, played by Zeta-Jones, who was raised believing Montero was her father.
Adventure with a Bond touch
Director Martin Campbell had also helmed GoldenEye and Casino Royale, the first Bond films for Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. The article describes Zorro’s glamorous settings, daring escapes and romance as elements that give it the feel of a Bond adventure.
The 1998 film reintroduced a character with roots in a 1920s movie serial. Its mix of swashbuckling action and updated storytelling made the masked hero accessible to a new audience.
A memorable screen partnership
Banderas plays Alejandro as both a folk hero and a showman, using flair and a smile to unsettle opponents. Elena is presented as his partner rather than a damsel in distress, and the two share a bond built around hidden vulnerabilities.
Their chemistry recalls Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in The Mummy, particularly in scenes where Elena and Alejandro test each other’s sword skills. Hopkins’ presence adds a connection to Zorro’s earlier legacy.
Zorro’s legacy in animation
The film spawned The Legend of Zorro in 2005 and helped inform Banderas’ portrayal of Puss in Boots. The animated character’s hat, clothing and sword-carved signature echo elements of the live-action Zorro.
Banderas later voiced Puss in Boots in two more Shrek sequels and two spin-off films. The Mask of Zorro is available to stream free on Pluto.
