White Sox Reportedly Poach World Series Brewers to Fill Key Front Office Role

A vacant scouting post filled

The White Sox had been without an amateur scouting director since Mike Shirley stepped down on Sept. 12. The role is important to the organization’s baseball operations, even if the vacancy had little effect on the major-league club for the rest of 2026.

Chicago reportedly selected 30-year-old Matt Roffe, who served as the Brewers’ assistant director of amateur scouting during the past season. The White Sox have not formally announced the appointment. The report says that may allow Roffe to take part in Milwaukee’s celebrations, including Friday’s parade.

Roffe’s scouting background

Before his most recent Brewers position, Roffe spent four years as a manager and coordinator of scouting organizations. Earlier, he worked for three seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ scouting department.

Roffe and White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield had previously worked in Arizona. Barfield was the Diamondbacks’ director of player development while Roffe was with the club. Roffe also interned with the Brewers and San Diego Padres, and held internships in Statcast and labor relations at MLB.

Draft duties and outlook

Roffe’s precise daily responsibilities have not been established, but he will run the White Sox’s amateur draft. Chicago holds the No. 23 pick in the 2027 draft. The hire brings a Brewers front-office member to a team seeking to build on its recent season. The report describes the move as an encouraging sign for the White Sox, while noting that further offseason moves remain a hope rather than an announced plan.
