Deadspin: Pyotr Kochetkov sets Hurricanes franchise mark in Blues matchup

Kochetkov reaches franchise milestone

Kochetkov improved to 9-0-0 and set a Carolina record for wins by a goaltender to start a season. He had shared the mark with former teammate Frederik Andersen, who opened a season with eight consecutive victories five years ago.

The goalie made 24 saves and started his third straight game. He was pursuing his second shutout in four games before Columbus scored in the third period.

Carolina builds early lead

Jordan Martinook opened the scoring with 4:09 remaining in the first period. Carolina held a 16-8 advantage in shots in the opening frame. Mark Jankowski scored 16 seconds into the third period in his second game back after missing more than a week with an injury. It was his seventh goal of the season, and he had scored in seven of his last eight games. Logan Stankoven also scored for Carolina, while Seth Jarvis had two assists.

Blue Jackets threaten late

Denton Mateychuk scored at 6:56 of the third period while the teams were skating four-on-four. Kent Johnson later scored on a power play, bringing Columbus within 3-2 with 10:10 left.

The Blue Jackets put 11 shots on goal in the third period, but could not complete the comeback. Goaltender Jet Greaves stopped 24 shots, and Columbus remained without a regulation victory since its season opener.
