FDA warns Medline electric beds pose fire hazard after 2 deaths and 16 serious injuries

FDA warns of electrical risks

The beds use electric motors and remote controls to change a patient's position during treatment. Medline says that if motors or other parts jam under certain conditions, electrical components may overheat.

The company says overheating can lead to smoke, sparks, melting, burning or fire. The FDA alert also cites possible electrical shock and burns.

Users told to stop using beds

Medline issued an urgent safety notice this week telling customers to discontinue use before modifying the beds and other products. The company recommended modifications in an Oct. 24 press release for customers who continue using them.

Company exits care-bed market

Medline said accessories used with the beds may create risks of asphyxiation or entrapment, which can cause injury or death. The notice covers the beds and related products.

The Northfield, Illinois-based company said it is ending production of homecare and long-term care beds and accessories and exiting the market. Medline, which is publicly listed, has a market value of $43 billion; it did not immediately respond to CBS News' request for comment.
