Jahmyr Gibbs Leads NFL in Touches: Could Detroit Lions Make Surprise Trade for Depth Behind Gibbs?

Gibbs’ workload grows
Gibbs has been central to Detroit’s offense since the team traded David Montgomery in the offseason. Through six games, he has combined speed and physicality while taking on a substantial share of the backfield work.
His 134 rushing attempts rank third in the NFL, and his 166 total touches lead the league. The concern is whether that volume could wear down his explosiveness later in the season, especially if Detroit reaches the playoffs.
Options behind Gibbs
Sione Vaki has appeared in all six games, recording 16 carries for 56 yards. He has also helped with pass protection on passing downs. Isiah Pacheco, who joined Detroit on a one-year contract after four seasons in Kansas City, is on injured reserve following a back procedure. He is expected to remain out until December. ESPN reported that Detroit has stayed in contact with free agent Kareem Hunt after hosting him during training camp.
Three possible trade targets
Kenny Gainwell, currently with Tampa Bay, is behind Bucky Irving and could potentially be available for a late-round draft pick. He has played for the Eagles and Steelers, and Lions fans may recall his 45-yard receiving touchdown against Detroit at Ford Field last season. His experience as both a runner and receiver could complement Gibbs.
Tennessee’s Tony Pollard is in the final year of his contract. He entered this season after four straight campaigns with more than 1,000 rushing yards, and also recorded a career-high 55 receptions in 2023. He has been the Titans’ top option despite the team’s struggles.
Alvin Kamara was also listed by ESPN among honorable-mention trade targets. Though no longer the same two-way threat as in earlier seasons, he remains an option as a runner and receiver. Detroit coach Dan Campbell worked with him during his time on the Saints’ staff. Through six appearances, Kamara has 125 rushing yards and 27 catches.
Deadline could shape decision
The Nov. 10 trade deadline gives Detroit a chance to add a veteran back and reduce Gibbs’ burden. Jonathon Taylor of Indianapolis and Saquon Barkley of Philadelphia are presented as unlikely targets.
Whether the Lions make a move remains uncertain. The potential candidates could offer added depth, but the team’s current use of Vaki and Pacheco’s expected absence help explain why another option is being considered.
