From Nuclear Fear to Small-Town Suspense: 5 Thriller Miniseries Where Every Episode Scores 10, Ranked

A high bar for every episode

Limited series are built for tighter storytelling, but a mid-season episode can still feel stretched when a plot designed for a shorter format fills six hours. These five shows are singled out for making even their weakest hour feel necessary.

The series range from five to eight episodes and premiered between 2016 and 2022 on services including HBO, BBC One, AMC and Apple TV. Four draw on real events or previously published books; Mare of Easttown instead began as an original story by Brad Ingelsby.

Distinct worlds and tensions

Each series develops its own atmosphere. Chernobyl centers on existential and institutional fear at a Soviet nuclear plant, while Mare of Easttown builds a community just outside Philadelphia.

Sharp Objects relies on a Southern mood, and Black Bird explores friendship within a prison community. The Night Manager turns to seduction and power at a villa in Mallorca.

The Night Manager’s appeal

Tom Hiddleston plays former soldier Jonathan Pine, who is drawn into an investigation of arms dealer Richard Roper, played by Hugh Laurie. Olivia Colman portrays intelligence officer Angela Burr, whose pursuit of Roper includes tense negotiations with her superiors.
