Why smart people are saying Anthropic’s IPO paperwork raises tough questions

Financial picture draws attention

The filing gives investors a view of Anthropic’s finances as it prepares for a potential blockbuster IPO. It reported $4.6 billion in revenue and a net loss of roughly $42 billion in 2025, and said it plans to trade as ANT.

The document included financial statements through June 30 but did not provide a full third-quarter update. Gary Marcus criticized that omission and predicted the company’s economics had not improved; Business Insider had earlier reported that Anthropic told investors it brought in $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 45% from the previous quarter.

Growth comes with large obligations

Venture capitalist Sarah Guo highlighted the company’s operating-profit trajectory and its focus on novel discovery. She also questioned how consumption-based revenue might align with long-term computing obligations, and wondered how public scrutiny could affect the company’s operations and reputation.

Harrison Rolfes pointed to $11.6 billion in second-quarter revenue as a positive sign, while flagging $321.4 billion in future lease payments and $265.6 billion in fixed minimum purchase commitments. He said the price range, third-quarter revenue and total computing commitment remained undisclosed, and noted that Anthropic’s founders retain substantial voting power.

Investors weigh risk and prospects

Ann Bordetsky said the filing could establish a high standard for how capital markets assess AI startups. Sam Ro argued that investors should focus more on future earnings expectations than past profits or losses, while saying the stock’s performance after its market debut was uncertain.

Gavin Baker said Anthropic’s annual recurring revenue may have risen sharply despite price cuts, and that year-end revenue above $100 billion appeared possible. Research firm SemiAnalysis described the company as growing rapidly and operating-profit positive in the June quarter; Jacob Bourne said the filing arrives amid investor concern about debt-funded AI infrastructure and the high cost of developing frontier models.
