Walking Dead: Aftermath Officially Reunites Rick and Daryl in a New Game

A reunion through gameplay

Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon have followed separate paths in the franchise, leaving their on-screen reunion uncertain. The mobile game offers fans a way to play as both characters together.

Back to Atlanta's outskirts

The story begins near Atlanta at the start of the zombie apocalypse. Players first control Rick, then recruit familiar survivors including Daryl, Michonne, Maggie, Glenn, Carol and Negan.

Combat and settlement building

Each survivor has distinct weapons, abilities and combat styles, giving players options for how to approach battles. Outside combat, players gather resources, improve equipment and assign survivors roles.

Players must also build and defend a settlement. Locations drawing on the original series include Hershel's Farm, Woodbury, Terminus and Alexandria.

A new competitive mode

An October 23 update added Rivals, a player-versus-player mode. Players form teams of three survivors and compete against rival camps, creating a chance to bring Rick and Daryl together in combat.

Aftermath has earned a 4.6-out-of-5 rating on Google Play and more than 1 million downloads. Its developers have added characters, gameplay improvements and events, though the game does not provide the canonical television reunion fans may be waiting for.

Key points

  • Aftermath features Rick and Daryl as playable survivors, but not in a canonical television reunion.
  • The game starts near Atlanta and lets players recruit several characters from the original series.
  • Players fight walkers and other enemies, build a settlement and defend it.
  • The Rivals mode lets teams of three survivors compete against rival camps.
