Why The CW Deserves Kudos for Successfully Adapting One of DC’s Greatest Superhero Teams of All Time

A DC Team Takes Center Stage

Stargirl centers on the Justice Society of America, an early DC team whose legacy preceded the Justice League. Courtney Whitmore, played by Brec Bassinger, becomes Stargirl after finding the Cosmic Staff, once wielded by Starman, played by Joel McHale.

The series reveals that the JSA was attacked by the Injustice Society of America, and its members were believed to have been killed. That history sets up a story about younger heroes stepping forward to rebuild the team.

A New Generation Rises

Courtney leads a group of teenagers into the new Justice Society. Some have ties to the original members, while others do not, giving the revived roster its own identity.

Original JSA figures later appear in flashbacks and in the present, creating connections between generations. John Wesley Shipp also returns as Jay Garrick, linking Stargirl to his Arrowverse role as The Flash.

A Richer Look At The JSA

The Justice Society’s comics history includes heroes such as Green Lantern Alan Scott, Doctor Fate, Hawkman and Hawkgirl. Black Adam marked the team’s debut in the DCEU, introducing it to audiences in that shared universe.

Black Adam presents the JSA in action, while Stargirl spends more time on its members’ personalities and relationships. Across three seasons, the series builds emotional investment in the heroes and gives their dangerous situations greater weight.

Key points

  • Stargirl follows Courtney Whitmore as she helps rebuild the Justice Society of America.
  • The series focuses on younger heroes while bringing original JSA members into the story.
  • John Wesley Shipp reprises his Arrowverse role as Jay Garrick.
  • Stargirl offers a deeper character-focused portrayal of the JSA than its appearance in Black Adam.
