Sherlock Holmes Show Finally Solving a 123-Year Mystery With a New TV Story

A Victorian-era Holmes story

After modern versions such as the BBC’s Sherlock and CBS’ Elementary, recent adaptations have leaned toward the Victorian setting of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. Prime Video’s Young Sherlock is preparing a second season, while Sky Television is developing The Death of Sherlock Holmes for a planned 2027 release.

The series was created by Claudia Bluemhuber, André Küttel, and Pierre Monnard. It draws mainly on “The Final Problem” and “The Adventure of the Empty House,” stories about Holmes’ apparent death and his eventual return.

A case in the Swiss Alps

Rafe Spall plays Holmes, and the story takes place in Switzerland in 1891. As in the books, Holmes confronts Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, where both are presumed dead. Moriarty dies, while Holmes finds a way to survive; the show’s explanation may differ from the original story.

Weak and suffering from amnesia, Holmes is taken in by local villager Alma Kohler, played by Deleila Piasko. When her young son Franz is accused of killing the town doctor, Holmes investigates. The case grows into a conspiracy as he tries to recover his memories.

Filling the Great Hiatus

The books describe Holmes traveling the world after Reichenbach Falls to dismantle what remains of Moriarty’s criminal network. The show is set to explore that interval, including the cases Holmes pursued and the connections he formed.

Thomas Kaschel plays Dr. John Watson, and Christian Koerner plays Mycroft Holmes. The series may also examine how Holmes regains his memory and what leads him to return to London.

A new chapter in Holmes lore

The series aims to add detail to the Great Hiatus, a period rarely explored in television adaptations. Its focus on Holmes’ experiences and relationships could show how the time away shaped him personally and professionally. How well the show will be received, and how long it will run, remain unknown.

Key points

  • Rafe Spall plays Holmes, who survives Reichenbach Falls but has amnesia.
  • Holmes investigates a doctor’s killing after Alma Kohler’s son is accused.
  • The series explores the period between Holmes’ presumed death and return to London.
