After McAfee voices frustration over GameDay experience, ESPN, University of Utah issue statements

Frustrations aired on Saturday

College GameDay was in Utah ahead of the No. 10 Utes’ game against No. 14 Houston. During the show’s final segment, McAfee described frustrations from the weekend and picked Houston to win on the road.

He pointed to a video posted on the university’s social media accounts before the broadcast. Students in the video joked about his catchphrase and shirtless crowd bit. McAfee also mentioned the kicking contest, where a student declined a $1 million offer; the prize at BYU the prior weekend had been $3 million.

Utah later removed the video from its social channels. McAfee returned to the issue on Monday, saying he had been “very, very uncomfortable” during the show.

Safety concerns draw response

On Monday, McAfee alluded to the assassination of Charlie Kirk while questioning whether the university should amplify reasons people might dislike him. The account of the video in the article says the students appeared familiar with his routine, rather than expressing hatred toward him.

ESPN said the safety of its on-air team, crew and fans was paramount. In a statement provided to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, the network said it supported McAfee and recognized his concerns about safety and security.

Utah apologizes for video

The University of Utah apologized for posting the video and for creating any impression McAfee was unsafe or unwelcome. It said its goal was lighthearted engagement about his return to campus, but that it missed the mark.

The university said staff are responsible for reviewing and posting material on official accounts and that it took full accountability. It added that officials had contacted McAfee to express appreciation and regret, and said he and the GameDay crew were welcome back.

Utah said ESPN’s show had visited campus seven times and described its relationship with the crew as positive. McAfee’s return remains an open question.
