Wheel of Time Officially Rewriting History With an Ambitious New Adaptation

A new path for the saga

Brandon Sanderson, who finished the final three novels after Robert Jordan’s death, called the cancellation a “tragedy,” expressing regret that the show had not stayed closer to the books. Sanderson is overseeing new luxury leatherbound editions but has said he does not plan to write more novels or extend the story.

Players shape the conflict

War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is scheduled to launch in 2027 as an official strategy board game from Dire Wolf, publisher of Dune: Imperium and Clank! It draws on all 14 main novels, starting around The Shadow Rising and building toward the Last Battle.

Players’ choices, alliances and tactics can alter how events unfold. The game has an accessible Hero Mode and a larger Epic Mode, which includes the climactic confrontation known as Tarmon Gai’don. In Epic Mode, players command the forces of Light or Shadow, develop characters including Rand al’Thor, Mat Cauthon and Egwene al’Vere, or unleash the Forsaken to bolster the Dark One’s armies.

Novel-inspired missions and events can play out differently each time. The campaign ends in a major clash involving the characters and armies players have assembled, and the result is not fixed: the Dark One could win. These alternate outcomes do not change the books’ canon, but give players a chance to create their own version of the saga.

A different medium for fantasy

The source material’s scale has challenged television adaptation. Its 14 main novels contain thousands of named characters, many locations and complex storylines; bringing the whole saga to television would require a large budget and potentially dozens of seasons. With the series canceled, another costly live-action version seems unlikely soon.

A tabletop game faces fewer of those constraints, allowing Dire Wolf to draw on the franchise’s mythology without cutting characters to fit a television budget. Its interactive format also gives fans direct control over a story they may have followed for decades, exploring outcomes Jordan did not write.

The project’s Kickstarter campaign raised more than $1.1 million from over 6,000 supporters. War of the Dragon is also part of a wider tabletop gaming initiative, pointing to further franchise activity, though the article provides no details about what else is planned.
