Security concerns mount as Saudi Arabia confirms January start for Asian Cup 2027 despite attacks

Schedule and opening match
The Asian Cup is scheduled to begin on January 7, 2027, with hosts Saudi Arabia facing Palestine in Riyadh. The final is set for February 5 at the same venue, the 72,000-seat King Fahd Sports City Stadium.
Other opening matches include South Korea against Yemen, Australia against Singapore, and Iran against China. Saudi Arabia will host the tournament for the first time.
Security questions persist
A senior Japanese football official said last week that the security situation would make hosting the tournament as scheduled difficult. The official said Saudi representatives had described the safety of players, fans and attendees as their top priority.
Flights and future hosting
Riyadh announced late Saturday that international flights would resume from Terminal 2 at King Khalid International Airport on Sunday. Terminal 1 was designated for domestic flights. The Asian Cup comes seven years before Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the 2034 World Cup.
