Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra firmware fixes reboot and display bugs, with more improvements

Three issues addressed

The October 22 firmware release targets three problems reported with Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra: screen flickering, unexpected restarts and lengthy reboot times. Microsoft also lists additional bug fixes and general performance improvements without specifying what they are.

Tom Warren experienced slow reboots and screen trails when moving windows rapidly during his review. He also reported speaker interference that stopped after a reboot; Microsoft was asked whether the update addresses that issue.

Restart may be required

Microsoft advises that users may need to restart the Surface Laptop Ultra after installing the firmware to complete remaining installation steps. Its instructions direct users to choose Start, then Power, then Restart.

Delivery and installation

The update is planned for all Surface Laptop Ultra devices, though Microsoft says it will not arrive on every device at once. Users who do not want to wait can install it through Microsoft’s driver and firmware page. The firmware cannot be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version once installed.

Key points

  • The October 22 firmware targets flickering, unexpected restarts and slow reboots.
  • Microsoft also cites unspecified bug fixes and performance improvements.
  • A device restart may be needed to complete installation.
