Anthropic IPO Filing Answers Biggest AI Boom Questions: Can Labs Actually Make Money?

Revenue and profit accelerate

Anthropic reported $11.6 billion in revenue in the second quarter of 2026, a 1,368% increase from the same period a year earlier. Computing and infrastructure spending rose 300%, while other expenses increased 741%.

The company generated $2.08 in revenue for every dollar spent on computing, up from 40 cents in the first quarter of 2025. It posted $974 million in quarterly operating profit, an 8% margin; its adjusted operating margin was 19%, compared with negative 129% a year earlier.

Revenue per employee rose from $1.4 million to more than $6.6 million. For comparison, Mahaney estimated annual revenue per employee at about $3.2 million for Meta and $2.5 million for Google, while noting the comparison was imperfect.

A wider customer base

As of September, more than 11,900 Anthropic customers generated at least $100,000 in annual revenue, up from over 950 a year earlier. More than 1,900 customers spent at least $1 million annually.

No customer accounted for over 10% of revenue during the first nine months of 2026. The five largest customers made up about 21% of third-quarter revenue, down from roughly 36% in the first quarter. Mahaney wrote that customer concentration may be less concerning than investors had feared.

Cash and major commitments

Anthropic reported more than $130 billion in cash and short-term investments on June 30. Mahaney estimated the company had used about $9 billion since its start more than five years ago.

Mahaney estimated Anthropic had entered into nearly $800 billion in computing arrangements. About $266 billion was fixed or guaranteed as of June, and many other arrangements depend on capacity being delivered, can be adjusted, or include cancellation provisions.

The commitments assume revenue growth that is not secured by contracts, Mahaney wrote. Much of Anthropic’s revenue comes from customers paying for usage, while some computing agreements require minimum payments whether or not the company uses all the capacity.

Costs could reshape the outlook

Anthropic warned that spending will rise as it shifts toward leasing AI chips and running more of its own computing infrastructure, rather than relying entirely on Amazon, Google and other cloud providers. That transition could make future cash flow less attractive even if operating profits keep improving.

The filing shows that selling AI can produce profits, but it does not settle how much the company is worth. The remaining test is whether Anthropic can sustain those results as its computing bills grow.
