Clayface’s Aaron Paul Cameo Hints at a Deeper Story About Matt Hagen

A brief appearance in the film
Clayface features Aaron Paul as Jimmy “One Nut” Hagen, Matt’s father, whose death is mentioned earlier by a Gotham gangster. In the third act, Matt enters mobster Victor Szabo’s club and briefly takes Jimmy’s form to distract the gangster before punching him.
Paul’s role was originally planned to be larger. Director James Watkins told Entertainment Weekly that the film would have included scenes looking back at Matt’s childhood in Gotham.
The story behind the change
In the planned flashbacks, Paul would have portrayed Matt’s abusive father. Watkins said the film nearly explored “sins of the father” as a theme, but he ultimately decided revenge was more universal and relatable.
Watkins pointed to films such as John Wick and The Equalizer when explaining the choice. He described Matt as a decent person whose primal impulses can become dangerous, whether they involve love or retribution.
What the cameo suggests
Watkins said people can feel wronged and want to act, even when they are powerless to do so. He said Jimmy’s appearance helps Matt get revenge and “probably” demonstrates that Matt is not his father.
The film’s short scene offers little time to establish that contrast. With the planned flashbacks removed, the cameo’s purpose may be less clear than Watkins intended.
