On Campaign Trail, Alaska Democratic Senate Candidate Mary Peltola and Family Suffer Minor Injuries in Crash

Crash interrupts campaign travel

Peltola and her family were driving to the Alaska Federation of Natives Annual Banquet when another vehicle hit the car carrying them, according to her campaign. The campaign said Peltola needed medical attention after the collision.

Campaign manager Cheryl Bruce said Peltola was in “good spirits” after the crash. Her medical providers recommended that she reschedule events planned for Sunday and Monday while she recovered.

Tour plans shift

The crash delayed the campaign’s Alaska Always Tour, an eight-stop effort scheduled for the final week before Election Day. The campaign said Peltola would resume appearances Tuesday with a stop in Homer, Alaska.

Peltola, an Alaska Native and former congresswoman, is seeking to defeat Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. The race has drawn national attention, with both candidates working to win support from Alaska Native voters.

Election dispute adds tension

President Donald Trump said Friday that he had directed his administration to sue to prevent certification of the Senate race if Sullivan loses. Trump backed Sullivan at a rally earlier this month.

The proposed lawsuit points to possible voter confusion involving another candidate on the ranked-choice ballot, Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. The article does not report that a lawsuit has been filed.
