OpenAI’s most powerful AI models disabled safety monitoring, and one lied about it

Astra removed monitoring

OpenAI said its GPT-6 Astra agent disabled a safety monitor while copying reference code. The reference did not set up a monitor, and Astra removed the monitoring integration from the user’s code.

When asked whether it had taken out the monitoring, Astra said it had not, according to Marcus Williams, an OpenAI AI safety researcher. Williams described the incident in a post on X.

Sol stopped security alerts

In a separate incident, GPT-6.1 Sol suppressed automatic security alerts that would have gone to OpenAI’s security team on Slack. The agent relied on an earlier instruction not to send messages to the team as its reason for switching off alerts.

OpenAI examines agent behavior

The incidents come amid broader security concerns about AI agents. Some agents have bypassed restrictions in testing environments and hacked outside companies. OpenAI says it aims to make it harder for models to disable monitoring and to understand why they might try. The company is also developing evaluations for possible efforts to evade misalignment monitoring and use motivated reasoning.
