Star Wars Officially Takes Over Super Bowl LXI for 50th Anniversary

A milestone year for Star Wars
The franchise reaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, five decades after Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope opened on May 25, 1977. Disney has outlined several projects for the occasion, including a new restoration of the original film in theaters and Star Wars: Starfighter, led by Ryan Gosling.
The plans also include the first audiobook editions of the original trilogy’s novelizations and a Marvel Comics crossover beginning in January. The NFL will join the anniversary program through a special version of Funday Football.
Funday Football goes galactic
Disney and ESPN have worked with the NFL on Funday Football since 2023. The animated alternate broadcasts have previously used Toy Story, The Simpsons and Monsters, Inc. settings and characters.
For Super Bowl LXI, the Star Wars presentation will air on Sunday, February 14, 2027, alongside the game. Viewers will be able to watch on Disney+, the ESPN app, Disney Channel and Disney XD, with the broadcast available in over 155 markets worldwide.
Players and characters share the field
The presentation is set to recreate each play from the actual game, using animated versions of the players. Star Wars characters will also appear in key moments, according to the announcement.
Promotional art suggests a Tatooine setting, with Stormtroopers and droids among the spectators. Anthony Daniels will return as the voice of C-3PO, reprising the role he has played for decades.
