AI could add $30 trillion yearly, Elon Musk says, as robots offer a way to solve America’s debt burden
A different path to debt reduction
Musk said he concluded that technology, not savings from spending reductions, offers the only route to resolving the national debt. He described trying to save enough to solve the problem as impossible.
He added that a president might be able to make deficit reduction a main priority. But, he said, efforts to curb wasteful spending create political opponents. Musk said support for addressing the deficit is lacking in the presidency, the House, the Senate and the judiciary. His comments contrast with his earlier effort to reduce federal spending.
His role in government efficiency
He also looked back on his time with the Department of Government Efficiency, including wielding a chainsaw. Musk acknowledged that he had become carried away.
A large economic forecast
Musk estimated that digital superintelligence could increase worldwide production of goods and services by 20% to 30%. He put the potential addition to the global economy at roughly $30 trillion annually. Reflecting on his priorities, Musk said he should have left and devoted himself to AI earlier.
